litterless
A litterless lunch
is a lunch that has all items that can be recycled, composted or re-used. Use reusable containers to bring your lunch to school (plastic containers). Bring only what you will actually eat that day so there is no waste. Bring foods in natural containers like oranges in their peels and hard boiled eggs in their shells. As we are already composting at MRO this should be a piece of cake for us Monsignor Ronan’s. Let’s challenge the classes to see who can have the most litterless lunches! Every Friday will be our litterless lunch days. Mark this on your calendars

councilStudent Council News
Activities that the student council has been involved in this year demonstrate growing leadership in our students.  During November Interviews council members greeted parents and served as their guides throughout the school.  All members helped to run the Candy-gram fundraiser during the Valentines Day event, as well as assisted in the handing out of refreshments.  The funds raised will contribute to their work in special community projects, and also be shared with our Catholic School Community Council.  Their opinions and voices are valued as student representation on the Safe Schools Team.  Recently hard working students became involved in an exciting project that will contribute to MRO's healthy and safe school environment.  The Speak Up project funded by the Province gives our students a chance to get involved in making our school a better place to learn.  Their 3 year project includes plans to construct a shelter for students in the yard; to make a garden to provide produce for our breakfast club and healthy snack program; and lastly, to develop an energy saving initiative such as a wind turbine.  Our student council is an ambitious group of dedicated and energetic students who are demonstrating that they have the skills of our potential future leaders.

Bullying Awareness at MRO
During the week of November 14, 2010 MRO took a stand against bullying.  We created a graffiti wall (bulletin board) for the students to write positive messages about our safe and peaceful school environment that we continue to create.  We registered to participate in Pink Shirt day, which is February 23, 2011.  To educate the students about Pink shirt day we all wore something pink on November 18, 2010.  By doing this the kindergartens to grade 8 learned that pink stands for taking a stand against bullying.  Our morning announcements reflected on Justice and Peace and provided opportunities to develop strategies on how to create peace.  Classes incorporated bullying topics into the writing curriculum and produced short stories, poems and art work.  On Nov. 23 our grade 4 / 5 class will be putting on a bullying prevention assembly using drama and skits to show how to prevent bullying and how to stop it.  Reporting is a very important skill for students to learn as a way to stop bullying.

Last month we heightened our awareness around Bullying prevention by participating in Soren Bennick's Power of One dramatic presentation.  Through drama the students received the following message:  Report bullying when you see it.  Don't be a Bystander.  Bystanders are as guilty as bullies.  You can make a difference.  All of our students signed the Power of One Oath to not bully and to report, because you have the power of one.  We continue to give messages to stand up to bullying and to replace it with kindness.  Just think of how one small act of kindness can add up to a lot of acts of kindness and begin to change how we think about each other.
