MRO Learning Commons - Coming Soon!

21st Century Transformation of Our Library
I have some very exciting news that I would like to share with the MRO Family!

We are expecting delivery of our 3rd portable this week. Once the portable is on site, work will be completed by various local authorities and Board employees in order to secure "occupancy".

That being said, once the portable is ready for occupancy, our Grade 3/4 class will move into the portable and vacate our existing Library. At that point we are going to complete an almost $20,000 transformation of our current Library in order to bring it into the 21st Century.

Our traditional Library will be transformed into a Learning Commons

What does that mean?

"A learning commons is a whole school approach to building a participatory learning community. The library learning commons is the physical and virtual collaborative learning hub of the school. It is designed to engineer and drive future-oriented learning and teaching throughout the entire school. Inquiry, project/problem-based learning experiences are designed as catalysts for intellectual engagement with information, ideas, thinking, and dialogue. Reading thrives, learning literacies and technology competencies evolve, and critical thinking, creativity, innovation and playing to learn are nourished. Everyone is a learner; everyone is a teacher working collaboratively toward excellence.

Some metaphors for the school library learning commons might be: learning laboratory, idea factory, studio or even “great room” in the school and community."

We are still going to maintain the traditional use of the Library in terms of browsing through books and having classes visit to exchange library books, but the capabilities of the Learning Commons will be much more than that. The analogy that I love to use is that we are moving from a rotary phone to a cell phone, we can still make phone calls on a cell phone, but its use is much more far reaching.

Some of the goals for the MRO Learning Commons are:

Focus on Faith
Focus on Learning
Focus on the Learner
Focus on Pathways
Focus on Collaboration
Focus on Creativity
Focus on Innovation
Focus on Opportunity

We will work towards achieving these goals by providing the following:

Flexible Seating (wobble stools, sofas, bean bag chairs, portable work stations and L-chairs)
Access to Technology (Green Screen, iographer Kit, VR Goggles, iMacs, iPads, Chromebooks, Projector, 3D Printer)
Access to Robotics (Dash & Dot)
Lego Wall with Accessories
Mobile Learning Stations
Learning Carpets
Board Games and more...

I hope you are as excited about this transformation and opportunity as we are. More information will follow in the next couple of weeks! We are planning to host a "Grand Opening" in conjunction with a "Family Game Night" to promote Literacy and Numeracy opportunities.

God Bless,

Mr. Mauro Porco
