SPRING brings new life!
Our grade 2's hatched Quail eggs!
The grade 4 / 5 and grade 7 / 8 classes planted three Butternut Trees! Our carpentry wizards built another set of benches for around one of our maple trees! And our grade 7/8s have been growing Native wild flowering plants in their classroom, which will be transplanted into the conservation park behind the school - Northwood Park. Our students are actively engaged in making a difference and being a change agent with learning about the environment and caring for it. Awesome work MRO students!
During Catholic Education Week we have a number of activities happening in our class rooms. We will end the week with a May Celebration, in honour of Mary, with the Rosary Apostolates in the morning. In the afternoon we have Faith Activities planned where all the students will rotate through special fun events such as human knot, using numbers and colours guided meditation and more.
World Missionary Rosary Campaign
Every morning our school is participating in the World Missionary Rosary Campaign during the month of May. We are offering up prayers so that faith may grow, for an end to poverty, an end to hunger and violence, and so that there is love and unity among all Nations of the world.
Spirit Day at MRO raised money to contribute towards the Social Justice Club's goal to purchase 10 bedkits for Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW). Altogether they raised over $400! Later this month a representative from SCAW will visit us to speak to our students about this excellent project that helps children have a more comfortable and restful sleep! Our spirit day theme was to dress like the good old 70's where fundraising sold candy / groovy grams.
Kindergarten Registration
Full Day Kindergarten starts September 2012 at MRO. Early learning provides a great
foundation for the education of our students. Our entire school community looks forward to welcoming our youngest students as they begin a lifelong journey in learning. We encourage parents who are looking to register their child to drop by the office to pick up their copy of the package, which includes a parent booklet, child’s activity book and DVD. You can also find all of the information on our board’s website at
www.smcdsb.on.ca/parents/kindergarten. We are here to answer questions and help you prepare. Give us a call - 905-729-3473.
Picnic Table Project Now Bench Project
Thank you Mr. Butler, our grade 8 teacher, for sharing your carpentry skills with a number of our awesome grade 6 to
8 students who are now learning about career opportunities. This building project is n

ot just about math, and language curriculum, but about life long learning and developing values in our students. We are now in the midst of bench building around four of our trees to provide students with a place to play a game of cards, checkers or chess in the shade. By providing our students with a variety of games we are helping our students to keep our school yard safe. Busy minds keeps students busy with fun during recess!
Community programs in our school
Our
OPP partners are back for our grade 6s where they teach saying NO to drugs, alcohol and violence through the D.A.R.E. program. The OPP have also started a new program,
MAKING IT REAL, which is in its second year now for the grade 8s. It is an extension of D.A.R.E. and an opportunity to review with our graduates before they leave for high school to give them strategies to resist the unhealthy lifestyle of drugs, alcohol, substance abuse and violence. Also in our school is
New Path running the
S.N.A.P. program. They will be working with 2 of our classes to enhance healthy child development and to reduce social, emotional, or behavioral barriers to learning. This is about giving our children the skill-sets to help them make the right decisions when faced with difficult situations. This program supports our Health and Religion programs. This is a great program that we would like to eventually give to all of our students. It is tailored and geared to each classes' needs. With the peer pressure children deal with today, SNAP gives excellent coping strategies in decision making and problem solving.
We Rock at Bullying Prevention!
During Anti-Bullying Week, all classes gathered in the gym to present what they learned about BEING THE CHANGE agent to prevent bullying and to create a safe / peaceful school yard. Five stars and thumbs up to our students for taking a stand! They presented, through skits, songs, power point technology, rap and WORDS. Amazing and empowering work!
